Erasmus experience in Jaén: Traveling through Andalusia and the cultural dimensions of Spain – Tea Tešnjak
From the moment I decided to go on an Erasmus exchange to Spain, I felt that an incredible experience was waiting for me. Jaén, located in the heart of Andalusia, proved to be the perfect place to immerse myself in Spanish culture, but also to broaden my horizons through travel, new friendships, and unique experiences. Although Jaén may not be the most famous city in Spain, for me it has become more than just a place to live; it has also become a symbol of my personal growth.
Exploring Andalusia: Cities with History and Charm
One of the greatest luxuries of my Erasmus exchange in Spain was the opportunity to travel through Andalusia. All the cities I had the opportunity to visit had their own unique character and rich history.

In Cádiz we enjoyed the quiet streets and beaches, then headed to Córdoba, where we explored the amazing Mezquita, an architectural marvel that combines Islamic and Christian heritage.

Granada enchanted us with Alhambra gardens and palaces, while Marbella brought a completely different experience – sunny beaches and the smell of the Mediterranean, where we really felt the spirit of summer vacations in this country.

Each trip was an opportunity to immerse ourselves in the cultural and historical aspects of Spain.
Spanish Traditions: Fiestas, Olive Oil, and Bullfighting
There is nothing more authentic than participating in a Spanish fiesta. In Jaén, we had the opportunity to participate in local celebrations that were full of energy, music, dance and a rich selection of food. The atmosphere was incredible, and the people from all over Andalusia were warm and welcoming, which further enriched our stay.

Jaén is also famous for its olives, so we participated in olive oil tastings, where we had the opportunity to learn about the different types and methods of production. We met local producers and learned more about how olives are turned into "liquid gold". This segment of culture was a real discovery, because olive oil in Spain is not only a product, but also a symbol of tradition and identity.
Bullfighting, although controversial, is an inevitable part of Spanish culture. In Jaén, we had the opportunity to attend one of these traditional spectacles, which was a challenging but also fascinating experience. Although I did not share all the views on bullfighting, it cannot be denied that it is one of the aspects that shape the Spanish identity.

Friendships that last: An international experience
One of the most valuable parts of my stay in Jaén was the people I met. Erasmus is not only an opportunity for academic learning, but also for creating friendships that transcend national borders. I met students from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Croatia, Montenegro, but also from various parts of the world, including Latin America, Asia and Africa. Through those conversations, travels and shared experiences, I broadened my horizons and learned about different cultures, attitudes and traditions. Those friendships now make my Erasmus stay unforgettable.
Empowering experiences through studies and life
The Erasmus stay in Jaén was not only an academic challenge, but an opportunity for personal development. The experiences I gained in Andalusia helped me to understand my own culture more deeply and broaden my horizons. Spain gave me an insight into how tradition, history and modern society coexist, shaping lifestyles, approaches to education and even business. In addition, living in another country has taught me resourcefulness, openness and adaptability, which are skills that will benefit me in every future step.
Conclusion: The value of the Erasmus experience
My experience in Jaén was more than just a trip – it was a journey that allowed me to better understand myself and the world around me. Spain has become my second home, and Erasmus is an opportunity that can open doors to new possibilities for each of us. I hope that my experience will motivate others to embark on this unforgettable adventure and seize the opportunity to discover a new place, new people, and a new way of life.
