The mission of the University of Zenica

The mission of UNZE is based on two basic components of higher education:

  • teaching-scientific (educational) work i
  • scientific research work.

These two components of higher education are mutually conditioned, but for the sake of easier understanding and management of processes at the university, they can be broken down as follows:

  • education, both through teaching and through the scientific-research process, of high-quality, young experts (students), but also adults, in all areas of teaching that exist at the university, so that they can be productive in their existing and future activities,
  • continuous monitoring and improvement of scientific research work at the university; training (education) and involving as many young people as possible (assistants and other young people) in this process; connecting the university with the environment, economic and cultural events.

UNZE's mission includes helping economic, social and cultural development within and beyond the borders of the region and the country, providing scientific and technical support. At the same time, UNZE must fit into the national and international quality criteria of educational and scientific activities and results. In other words, all the results of teaching-scientific, scientific-research and professional work at UNZE must contain the character of universal values, which are not measured by regional qualitative evaluations.

The vision of the development of the University of Zenica

The vision of UNZE is to become a modern and respected higher education institution, included in the common academic space of Europe and the world.
With this vision, UNZE should become a smaller, flexible university with 8-10 members (organizational units: faculties, institutes, etc.) by 2010, which will award about 20 types of degrees (study groups) and have 6,000-8,000 students who will live and work in one well-rounded and functional campus.
The purpose of the development of higher education and scientific-research work in Zenica through the form and organizational structure of UNZE is to use the available resources in an organized and pre-planned manner and direct future activities in terms of the development of teaching-scientific work (education) and scientific-research work. In addition, in this way it is possible to optimally use all the mentioned resources in the function of the economic and overall social development of Zenica and the wider region.
The planned assumptions for the development of UNZE as an efficient university of fundamental and applied sciences should be compatible with the requirements of the society of the future, which must be capable of competing on the world market and which will generate the overall development of Zenica and the region.
The strategic goal of the development of higher education and scientific research work in ZE - DO Canton is the development of UNZE. It will be possible to achieve this goal by realizing a number of individual tasks (sub-goals), the most important of which are:
Consolidation and more rational use of available resources in the field of higher education and scientific research (personnel, facilities, laboratories, libraries, etc.),
The optimal arrangement of personnel in the execution of the teaching process and in the realization of scientific research and development research and projects, which raises the quality of teaching and ensures efficiency in research,
Creation of conditions to form scientific-research units (institutions or groups) by uniting staff and research laboratories in accordance with the Law on Scientific-Research Activities of ZE-DO Canton. This is the most effective way of creating the so-called a critical mass of personnel and knowledge that can successfully and competently solve a wide range of problems related to the economic and social development of the region. In addition, the "personnel and knowledge cells" formed in this way can, with their solutions, help the leaders of the appropriate levels of government in deciding on the issues of social development and current economy and business.
Creating conditions for the adoption of a long-term program for the development of higher education and scientific research in accordance with the needs of the region and ZE-DO canton,
Provision of material and personnel infrastructure for the formation of the Science and Technology Park (STP) as an efficient structure and mechanism for generating ideas and implementing technologies with the direct participation of knowledge and equipment of personnel from the UNZE structure. The science and technology park encourages the development of entrepreneurship and innovation as the basic features of competitiveness in market economy conditions,
More direct cooperation with the economy in the function of adapting the educational process to the needs of the restructuring and development of the economy, as well as the realization of as many application projects as possible, where the research results are most quickly applied in practice,
A significant increase in the inclusion of the young generation in university education, because the current percentage in BiH (about 12-15% of high school graduates continue their studies) is absolutely unacceptable. In this way, the level of knowledge of the young generation that is coming up will be raised and will be a generator of ideas and development.
Developing inter-university and other types of scientific and technical cooperation with institutions in BiH and in the world through various forms: joint projects, exchanges, study stays, conferences, seminars and other forms of cooperation. In this way, the most efficient transfer of information, technology, knowledge and experience is carried out, all with the aim of developing our own personnel and domestic companies and institutions,
Gathering of the best, most professional and mature staff, but also the most talented young people around the University, their further education and profiling and training for solving problems from the widest spectrum, especially new technologies and products. In addition, in this way, the negative process known as "brain drain" can be effectively stopped.
Creating better conditions in the area of student standards (housing, food, transportation, teaching and school supplies, health care, cultural and sports activities and involvement in international cooperation, etc.).
- Changing the overall environment in Zenica and the region when it comes to the attitude towards education and scientific research work, that is, science in general, as well as the attitude towards future development.
In relation to other universities in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the ex-SFRJ region, UNZE was fortunate to begin the construction of the administrative functions of an integrated university unencumbered by the burden of the past. The establishment of this model based on the examples of successful universities in Europe and the world, based on the principles of the Bologna process, are a good basis for evaluating the necessary level of centralization (integration) and decentralization. In short, UNZE strives primarily for integration, not centralization.

Activity plan for January, February and March 2006:

As part of the TEMPUS project "Quality Assurance at Universities in BiH, the following activities are priorities for the months of January, February and March 2006:

    1. 01.01.2006 – 15.02.2006 – Selection of persons at universities (members of the consortium) who will work as quality assurance experts.

The contact person at the universities of the consortium members should do 15.02.2006 submit the names of persons who will be employed as quality assurance experts and who will attend quality assurance training at the University of Graz. The University should submit biographies of selected persons (in local languages and in English) to SUS BiH (contact person: Asim Jusić).

    1. 01.01.2006 – 01.03.2006 - Coordination between universities in BiH, selected experts for quality assurance and the university in Graz during January and February 2006. Coordination is carried out by SUS BiH.

The main goal of the coordination is the successful organization of a seminar for the training of quality experts at the University of Graz, definitive determination of the date of its holding, and special preparations for the seminar itself (insurance of visas, travel, expenses...).

    1. 01.01.2006 – 01.04.2006 – Activities at universities related to the provision of premises for future centers for quality assurance.

These activities would take place in parallel with the above-mentioned activities, which would ensure the uniformity of project execution among universities and facilitate the easier organization of procurement and handover of equipment intended for quality assurance centers.
