Press release - The Senate of the University of Zenica confirms the legality of the Rector's mandate and appeals for the preservation of academic autonomy
At its extraordinary session, held today, the University Senate considered the decision of the Board of Directors to dismiss the Rector, made in circumstances that raised serious concerns regarding the legality and procedural correctness of such action.
In accordance with its jurisdiction and responsibility towards the academic community, the Senate, by an absolute majority of votes, decided to annul the disputed decision of the Board of Directors, and confirmed the valid mandate of the Rector, elected in accordance with the law, applicable regulations and rules of the University.
The Senate hereby recalls the importance of respecting academic self-government and university autonomy as one of the fundamental principles of a democratic society. Universities must remain free to decide on issues within their scope, without external unconstitutional and illegal pressures – especially those of a political nature.
The university is a community of knowledge, dialogue and institutional order. We call on all stakeholders to contribute to preserving legal certainty, stability and academic dignity, so that higher education continues to serve the public interest and future generations.
