Call for regional research on stereotypes and gender bias in criminal proceedings

As part of the project "Introducing a gender perspective to universities (UNIGEM)", the TPO Foundation from Sarajevo and the University Gender Resource Center (UNIGeRC) of the University of Sarajevo (UNSA) invite people from the academic community (professors, male and female students of doctoral studies, as well as scientists) from the field of humanities, social and especially legal sciences, as well as activists, who work in the field of combating gender-based violence, to participate in research that will deal with the analysis of verdicts for gender-based violence, especially sexual violence and femicide, and writing theoretical texts based on the aforementioned analysis.

The focus of the analysis will be on the arguments of the defense at the trials and in public, as well as the explanations of the judgments, with the aim of offering answers to questions such as these:

• do they make the victim co-responsible for the violence that happened,
• do they divide the victims into "good and bad", and considering the acceptability of their behavior before, but also during the procedure,
• do they interpret rapes as a misunderstanding, starting from the assumption that the strength of the victim's resistance, and not simply verbal non-compliance, is decisive for the rape to be characterized as rape, and
• do they start from gender stereotypes, such as wounded male pride and impulsiveness as inherent in "male" nature, when "explaining" the causes of violence.

The deadline for submission of abstracts is May 15, 2023.

The abstract should have a maximum of 300 words.

For authors, it will be until June 30, 2023. organized virtual workshop for further agreements.

The deadline for submitting complete works is September 10, 2023.
