The lectures will be given by renowned academic lecturers, artists. During the Winter School, in addition to acquiring new knowledge and participating in discussions, participants will have the opportunity to network and establish cooperation with their colleagues from 19 universities from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Croatia, and Montenegro.
Description
The Winter School Gender and Art is designed to provide students with insights into contemporary explorations of the complex relationship between gender and artistic practice. The School’s intensive program is dedicated to uncovering the ways in which gender identities, roles, and expectations have historically influenced and continue to shape the production, representation, and reception of art across cultures and time periods, and how artistic practice intervenes in representations of gender around us. The School’s goal is to collectively analyze how gender dynamics influence artistic creation and vice versa, from the traditional exclusion of women and people excluded on the basis of sex, gender, and sexual orientation, to the emergence of feminist and queer artistic movements that have challenged these conventions, marginalizations, and exclusions. Lectures will critically examine the contributions of women artists and marginalized sexual/gender/sexual minorities both historically and in contemporary contexts, providing students with the opportunity to view artistic production from a more inclusive and intersectional perspective.
One of the key goals of this program is to equip students with the knowledge and tools for critical analysis of art from a gender-sensitive perspective. By integrating feminist theory, postcolonial studies, and queer theory with art historical methods, students will explore topics such as the representation of gendered bodies in art, the role of art in shaping social norms about gender, and how gender influences artistic intent and audience interpretation. This interdisciplinary approach will help students gain a deeper understanding of the cultural, social, and political contexts that shape gender and art. The Winter School will foster critical thinking and encourage students to engage in contemporary debates about gender identity, representation, and inclusivity in the art world. Through lectures, workshops, discussions, and hands-on creative projects, students will develop skills that are essential for both academic research and professional practice in the arts, such as visual literacy, critical analysis, and curatorial thinking. This program also aims to strengthen participants’ competences in addressing issues of diversity and representation in their own creative practices or academic research through a deeper understanding of art as a powerful tool for social change, activism, and personal expression. Upon completion of the program, students will be empowered to engage more meaningfully in current debates about gender and art and to view art through a critical lens, while equipping them with the intellectual and practical skills needed for contemporary debates about gender, diversity, and equality in the art world and through artistic practice. This experience will encourage participants not only to analyze art in new ways, but also to make informed advocates for greater gender equality in artistic practice and process, as well as in society as a whole.
Attendees of the winter school are expected to:
- to regularly attend activities during the winter school,
- to participate interactively in lectures and discussions,
- to write a final paper with the support of a mentor after the end of the winter school (optional).
